NEW LONDON — Lawrence + Memorial Hospital was named as a 2026 High Performing hospital for Maternity Care for the first time by U.S. News & World Report yesterday, according to a press release.

“The U.S. News & World Report rankings serve as a meaningful reflection of the high standards we set for maternity care,” said Richard Lisitano, president of L+M. “This recognition speaks to the skill, compassion, and dedication of our teams, and reinforces our commitment to delivering exceptional care to every patient who turns to us for maternity care. We are honored to be acknowledged among the best in the country.”

It is the highest award a hospital can achieve in U.S. News's annual Best Hospitals for Maternity Care study.

In an evaluation of 901 hospitals across the United States for its 2026 ratings edition, U.S. News & World Report recognized only 92 for the additional “High Performing” rating.

The methodology is based on objective measures of quality, including:

C-section rates in lower-risk pregnancies
unexpected newborn complication rates
exclusive breast milk feeding rates
birthing-friendly practices
reporting on racial and ethnic disparities among other measures.

“Our continued focus on innovation, patient safety and clinical excellence drives us to keep raising the bar every day," said Dr. Sarah Cross, chair of Obstetrics & Gynecology at L+M and associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Yale School of Medicine.

With a 24 bed Maternity unit, L+ M has the only Level IIIA Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in southeastern Connecticut, providing an additional level of care for babies that requires extra medical services after delivery.

For the past 12 years, it has been designated as a baby friendly hospital, following the policies established by the World Health Organization and UNICEF to promote and support breastfeeding by providing nursing mothers with a breastfeeding support group upon being discharged.

The Best Hospitals for Maternity Care ratings help expectant parents, in consultation with their prenatal care team, in making informed decisions about where to receive maternity services that best meet their family's needs.

He couldn’t wait to devour the next set of "The Hardy Boys" books and lucky for him, he lived less than a mile away. “I didn't read 'The Hardy Boys,' I became the third brother. I lived them, I loved it,” he said. On the way home, he’d read one book while he carried the rest of the haul stuffed into his shirt. He was so absorbed in the story that he'd sometimes step off a curve, run into a tree or walk two blocks past his house without even realizing. Now, 74, he owns a bookstore of his own called Always Buying Books , in Joplin, the birthplace of Harlem Renaissance writer Langston Hughes.
