'The Count of Monte Cristo' has everything a novel needs to be exciting!

Poison, love, betrayal, and secrecy are just a few words to sum up "The Count of Monte Cristo." *Slight Spoilers I watched the 2002 movie starring Jim Caviezel as Edmond Dantes and I absolutely fell in love with it. This reminded me that I had the unread book sitting on my shelf for years. Why had I gone on with my life without having read it? This 1844 novel takes place during the Napoleonic era, a time when nearly everyone in society had secrets up their sleeves and nobody could be trusted. Edmond Dantes had it all: a kind heart, good looks, a beautiful fiancĂ© named Mercedes, and a chance at becoming captain of the ship, The Pharaon , at just 20 years old. Unfortunately, his thriving life comes to a complete halt when he is falsely accused for treason and thrown into the Chateau d'If. After 14 years of imprisonment, he manages to escape and seeks out revenge on those responsible.  Dumas succeeds at character development. This can be observed in the transition f

The first two episodes of PBS's 'Sanditon' had me hooked!

"These seaside resorts can be odd places and no one quite knows who anyone else is, where they come from, and what they're up to." - Mr. Heywood "Sanditon" is based on Jane Austen's unfinished novel. Meet Charlotte Heywood, played by Rose Williams, a small town country girl who comes from a big family of many siblings.  After helping the Parkers, a couple who gets into an accident on their way to Sanditon, played by Kris Marshall and Kate Ashfield, Tom Parker invites Charlotte to the seaside village. He tells her of his dream to transform it into a lively resort. It is at Sanditon where she must adjust to a society that is quite different from what she's used to. Although a seemingly quiet town, it is filled with complex characters, some of which have secrets up their sleeves. There she meets Sidney, played by Theo James, Tom's younger brother who is dashing, yet cold-hearted at first. He is the guardian of Georgiana Lambe, played by Crystal

My 'This Is Us' predictions! (Part One)

This Is Us returned on Tuesday January 14th for the second half of season 4, so I thought it would be the perfect time to lay out my predictions of what is yet to come. What causes the fallout between Randall and them? The end of the "So Long, Marianne" episode, (S4 ep. 9) shows the now 40 year old Big Threes. Viewers are surprised to see that the whole time Rebecca was out and Randall was calling her, it wasn't Thanksgiving, it was actually August 31, 2020. Mind blow! When Rebecca asks Kevin if Randall arrived yet, he replies, "No, mom. Randall's not coming. We're not speaking to him, remember?" Is the "we're" he's referring to, Kate and him, or him, Kate, Rebecca, and Miguel? The only reasonable guess that I can think of that would cause the fall out is Rebecca's situation. If the "we're" he's referring to is Kate and him, maybe they're mad because Randall delayed on the news about their mother

Asians take the lead

Slowly, but surely, the industry is diversifying with more people of Asian descent to the big screen. Here are some films with lead roles held by Asian-descent minorities. 1.) "Abominable" I absolutely can't wait to see this DreamWorks animated film! The movie is about a teenage girl named Yi (voiced by Chloe Bennet) who embarks on a journey with her two friends, Jin (voiced by Tenzing Norgay Trainor) and Peng (voiced by Albert Tsai), to return a Yeti to his home. Set in China, they must travel to The Himalayas. 2.) "Blinded By the Light" After watching this film, one can see why Bruce Springsteen's music is appreciated: it speaks to everyday people. Javed, played by Viveik Kalra, is a Pakistani teen living in small town Luton, where he finds comfort in the music of Springsteen while struggling with issues of racism, fitting in, and love. Best of all, it's based on a true story! 3.) "Yesterday" This film is definitely o
