"These seaside resorts can be odd places and no one quite knows who anyone else is, where they come from, and what they're up to." - Mr. Heywood
There she meets Sidney, played by Theo James, Tom's younger brother who is dashing, yet cold-hearted at first. He is the guardian of Georgiana Lambe, played by Crystal Clarke, the daughter of a sugar plantation owner and slave. Facing racism, she absolutely cannot stand being at Sanditon, that is until she becomes acquainted with Charlotte. The two young ladies, both of which who fearlessly stand up for themselves, immediately become the best of friends. Charlotte also befriends Young Stringer, played by Leo Suter, a young man working under Tom Parker, who aspires to be an architect. Then of course, you have the Denham step siblings, Esther, played by Charlotte Spencer, and Edward, played by Jack Fox. Edward is the nephew of Lady Denham, played by Anne Reid, the very affluent, outspoken, and rudest character of them all. The siblings battle it out with Clara Brereton, played by Lily Sacofsky, the seemingly favorite of Lady Denham, to be under her will. At first, Charlotte and Lady Denham do not get off on the right foot, especially after Lady Denham insults her by saying that industry is far more important now rather than farming.
A very brief analysis of the heroine Charlotte *SLIGHT SPOILERS ahead!**
Charlotte is quite different from the average young lady of the time. This is immediately observed from the way she rescues the Parkers couple where she jumps into action and offers her hand to help them out. It is in this instance that the female character was doing the rescuing rather than needing to be rescued. Additionally, it can also be observed when she helps Stringer's father after he is injured during construction. The doctor advises that she look away, but instead she helps lead and tells Sidney to hold the injured man's hand. Sidney is struck and amazed by the course of action she takes.PBS's "Sanditon" airs on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. until February 23rd.
