My 'This Is Us' predictions! (Part One)

This Is Us returned on Tuesday January 14th for the second half of season 4, so I thought it would be the perfect time to lay out my predictions of what is yet to come.

What causes the fallout between Randall and them?

The end of the "So Long, Marianne" episode, (S4 ep. 9) shows the now 40 year old Big Threes. Viewers are surprised to see that the whole time Rebecca was out and Randall was calling her, it wasn't Thanksgiving, it was actually August 31, 2020. Mind blow! When Rebecca asks Kevin if Randall arrived yet, he replies, "No, mom. Randall's not coming. We're not speaking to him, remember?" Is the "we're" he's referring to, Kate and him, or him, Kate, Rebecca, and Miguel?
The only reasonable guess that I can think of that would cause the fall out is Rebecca's situation. If the "we're" he's referring to is Kate and him, maybe they're mad because Randall delayed on the news about their mother's health or perhaps they disagree on what's the best way to handle her situation. Maybe Randall thinks it'd be best for her to be cared for 24/7 in a facility where she can be monitored and Kevin says otherwise. In the "Her" episode (S3 ep. 18), future Rebecca is staying at Kevin's house! Uncle Nicky was sitting right next to her, but where was Miguel?

Where does Kate and Toby's relationship head to?

Let's review the crushes and love that Kate has had in her life...

1.) Billy, the guy who Kevin gave all his candy to so that he would hold her hand in the haunted house (S2 ep. 6).
2.) Stewart, her first kiss! (S4 ep.2)
3.) Marc, her older boyfriend (S4 ep. 4).
4.) Toby, the man she marries and has a baby with.

In the season 3 finale, Toby arrives to Kevin's house by himself. When future Randall called him on the phone, viewers saw that he is by himself without Kate! When Toby says, "I just talked to Jack and they're on their way," what can't be assumed is that he is referring to Kate and Jack because it may be a reference to Jack and his expecting wife, Lucy (or wife and baby depending on how many years we're into).

There are two possibilities here. Kate and Toby's relationship doesn't last or Kate dies. There were a few instances in which Kate had health scares.

If Kate lives, will she end up being with someone else? If so, who? My prediction is that she'll end up with Marc.
Kate first met Marc at the music store where he offered her a job in the "Flip a Coin" episode (S4 ep. 4). When she tells him how long her parents were married, he responds, "Wow, that's a long time to love somebody." Hint, hint maybe?

In the next episode, "Storybook Love" (S4 ep. 5), Marc surprises her and shows up to join Kate in the dinner celebration. Perhaps the name of the episode itself, "Storybook Love," is a hint that that whoever the Big Three is with at the table is who they'll end up with in the future. For some reason, Kate and Marc's relationship did not last. Yes, they were young, but something big happened. When adult Kate sees a photo of herself with Marc from that night of the dinner celebration and shows her mom, Rebecca tells her, "I was trying so hard to hold it together that year after your father died, and I wanted to believe so badly that you kids were happy...I didn't see what was happening."
Kate replies, "I didn't see it either."
What happened? Maybe he became too overprotective and obsessed with Kate to the point where it eventually became a toxic relationship. I mean, he looked up her address in her job application which is kind of creepy and she even said so. Perhaps, they'll re-connect and he'll tell her he realized what he did was wrong when they were young.
Viewers are sure that Randall and Beth's relationship lasts, but not so sure about Kate and Kevin...which brings me to the next unanswered question...

Who is Kevin's fiancé and baby mama?

It must be Sophie. I mean, why else would the producers focus so much on Kevin and Sophie's relationship? Maybe Rebecca's condition brings them together. Sophie has known the Pearsons for such a long time. In the "Three Sentences" episode (S1 ep. 13), young Sophie comes as a guest for Kate's 10th birthday party.
I hope to see an episode that focuses on the background of the friendship between Kate and Sophie. How did Kate feel when Sophie and Kevin started dating?
Cassidy is a great character too, but it appears that her focus is on repairing the relationship between her and her ex husband, the father of her son.

What happens to Cassidy?

There's that saying that people come and go in one's life. Perhaps she is one of those people to Kevin and Kevin was to her. Maybe they remain friends because her and Uncle Nicky have something in common, the past of the war still haunts them. In the "Strangers" episode (S4 ep. 1), she pauses on a question about her mental health if she ever had thoughts of suicide. The camera jumps to a scene before viewers see if she circles yes or no.

Will Nicky ever fall in love?

Bringing up the "Flip A Coin" episode (S4 ep. 4) again, adult Kevin is in the car with Cassidy and Uncle Nicky. Nicky tells them that the trailer he owns wasn't actually for him, but a girl he loved named Sally. He and Sally met before he was drafted and they wrote letters to each other. He arrived at her house only to find that she wasn't home. Unfortunately, he took it as a sign that they weren't meant to be. No, Nicky, it's not that it wasn't meant to be, it just means that she wasn't home!

Will Malik and Deja's relationship last?

Deja and Malik are the perfect couple! Maybe a bit too perfect? In the "Strangers" episode (S4 ep. 1), Malik is shown working at an auto shop with his father, Darnell, where he approaches someone who his dad used to know. He tells him that he's aware of a "business" that he runs and he wants to "earn real money." He's hesitant to let Malik in on the "business" because he's Darnell's son.
"I got your number. I'll call you when you can grow a mustache," he says.
Malik, you're such a good kid, please stay on the right path.

How to avoid family quarrels during the most wonderful time of the year: Thanksgiving

Ah, Thanksgiving: a time of cheer, laughs, good food and getting together with the family. But for some, it may be daunting to meet with certain members. After all, we’ve all heard of the in-law horror stories and watched the movies: “Monster-in-Law,” (2005) “Meet The Parents,” (2000) and “ Crazy Rich Asians" (2018). "Meet the Parents" (2000) Raffi Bilek, a Licensed Certified Social Worker – Clinical and the director of the Baltimore Therapy Center , shared his advice on how to avoid family tensions. “These days, I think politics is the hot topic. For the past couple of years, it’s gotten more and more polarized and political issues cause big arguments,” he said. According to a 2022 poll conducted by The New York Times and Siena College , 19% of registered voters said that politics damaged relations with family members or friends.  With the recent release of the dates and locations of the 2024 presidential debates , it's likely to come about in conversation at le

Women In Translation Month: The woman behind Jojo Adventure Books

photo credit: Cait Malilay Emily Shan is a New York City public school teacher, stay-at-home mom and author and creator of Jojo Adventure Books , a bilingual children’s board book series that’s written in Cantonese and English. Launched in September 2022, the series is based on real adventures, both big and small, of her daughter Jojo. “At the same time, I’m creating the resources for ourselves as well as families who want to be able to pass down that Cantonese language to the next generation and hopefully future generations beyond that,” Shan said.  What inspired her to launch this project is that while she was shopping for children's books, she noticed that a lot of them were more catered toward Mandarin-speaking families. Mandarin and Cantonese are tone languages. "Cantonese has six to nine tones, whereas Mandarin has four to five. You’ll see Cantonese written as traditional Chinese characters, whereas Mandarin will typically be written in simplified Chinese characters,&quo
